Grand Pianos Sound Great

Do you play piano? Do want to learn to play piano better? Maybe you’re looking to make a piano purchase and you don’t understand the different types or you don’t understand why grand pianos cost so much more.

When it comes to pianos, most of us are aware of the two basic types:

• Grand pianos
• Upright pianos

Now do you really understand the difference in these

The grand piano is often associated with the jazz scene, with glitz and glamour and even with classical recitals. It’s large, deserving of its title “grand” and it’s known for producing a better sound than smaller, upright pianos. So what is it about grand pianos that make them sound so great?

It all comes down to how they are constructed. Here are some things to know about the construction of the grand piano:

• They have a modern piano design
• They are a top choice for top pianists and enthusiasts
• The strings hang horizontally – allowing gravity to help it work
• They have a special level that holds the hammer above the string for longer, allowing creation of a more musical features

Grand pianos are known to create a better sound than compact pianos and this is believed to be because of their construction. The strings go away from the keys only where as in a compact, upright piano, they go back and forth.

The grand piano can allow more experienced pianists to perform ornamentation and other musical features which is why it is often used in large performances and concerts. Since it allows for more space, the mechanism has the freedom to strike the string more clearly, producing the better sound.

The horizontal placement also gives a deeper resonation through the wood and this adds to the overall sound the instrument produces. Upright pianos really can’t compete with the sound of a grand piano but since it isn’t practical for the average person to own a grand, this means there is still a great market for upright pianos.

Not only are grand pianos larger than uprights, they are considerably more expensive and not an option for most people or for typical personal use.

Now you can see why the grand piano is also so expensive to purchase. Because they cost so much and they are so large, this is not the type of piano you would find in a typical person’s home.
